GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONG KONG
22nd June, 1936.
Sir,
With reference to your Secret telegram No.126 of the 9th August, 1935, and to previous correspondence on the subject of Kowloon City I have the honour to inform you that, as a result of negotiations conducted by the District Officer, all occupants of this area have accepted terms of compensation offered by the
Government.
2.
The terms include the free grant of sites on Crown Land in the neighbourhood, together with cash compensation totalling approximately $45,600. Raising the site for the new village to a level conforming with that required under the town- planning scheme will require the expenditure of a further $8,200.
The sum provided under Head 34 Sub-head 67 (page 104 of 1936 Estimates) is $34,000 only, and I therefore propose, subject to your approval, to approach the Legislative Council for a revote of approximately $20,000, being part of the sum of $30,000
provided but not expended in 1935.
3.
4.
It is in my opinion advisable that the opportunity should be taken without delay of disposing of this troublesome question, and I shall accordingly be glad to be informed of your approval, if granted, by telegraph.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient, humble servant,
A Caldecot
Governor, &c.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
W.G.A. ORMSBY-GORE, P.C., M.P.
